DA Photo Students visit Yellow House Art

Yellow House is a Jacksonville gem. Founded by Hope McMath in 2017, it is a place for collaboration, thought provoking exploration and for connection. We visited Yellow House to see Hope McMath of course, but also to see the current exhibit, “The Age of Cognizance” which features the work of three friends. Ricder Ricardo, Mimi Tran, and Kirsten Williams explore their Cuban, African, Swedish, and Vietnamese heritage and their experiences of belonging and exclusion in their work. As a teacher, I was thrilled to see my students engaged with the art, engaged with each other, and engaged with Hope around the issues these artists explored in their work. Yellow House also provided students with a time to reflect and enjoy lunch and conversation outside under the beautiful oak tree and to write on the prayer ribbons and tie them to the Community Tree. These experiences deepen my students’ understanding of the power of art, the power of THEIR art to move, to communicate, to matter.
